Remediation
An Environmental Remediation Strategy details the planned approach to managing and mitigating identified contamination risks on a site. Developed following a Phase 2 Intrusive Investigation and Options Appraisal, the strategy details how remediation will address specific pollutant linkages to make the site suitable for its intended use.
The strategy includes clear remediation objectives, selected techniques, implementation methods, regulatory compliance measures, and monitoring requirements. It also details what action will be taken if the method is not followed.
Prepared in accordance with the Environment Agency’s Land Contamination: Risk Management (LCRM) framework, BS 10175, and other relevant guidance, the Remediation Strategy must be submitted for approval to regulators or planning authorities before works begin.
A robust strategy ensures remediation is technically sound, proportionate to the risk, and aligned with legal and planning obligations, providing confidence to developers, regulators, and stakeholders alike.
Verification
An Environmental Remediation Verification Report documents and confirms that remediation works have been completed in accordance with an approved Remediation Strategy. It is a critical component of the contaminated land management process, providing the evidence base required to demonstrate that identified risks have been successfully mitigated.
The report typically includes a summary of the remediation objectives, the methods used, site observations, waste disposal documentation, and post-remediation sampling results. It may also include photographic records, as-built drawings, and third-party verification.
Verification is essential for satisfying planning conditions, regulatory closure, and stakeholder assurance. The report ensures that the site is suitable for its intended use and that no unacceptable risks remain to human health or the environment.
